Web Design Course PictureIf planning to start an online web design business, you are probably wondering how you’ll secure those first jobs.

How will you get new clients to trust you enough to hire you as their designer?

The answer lies within one word – portfolio!  Building a professional looking web design  portfolio isn’t that difficult, even if you’re brand new to designing.  Here some portfolio ideas and a quick video tutorial to get you started.

Include Learned Skills and Educational Background

If you’ve recently completed web design training, whether it be through an online course or a local college, then be sure to include this in your portfolio.  A portfolio is sort of like a resume on steroids!  It gives details about your job experience and education while also providing real examples of your work.

Showcase Yourself – Give Online Web Design Training References

Outline where you learned to design websites and which programming languages and/or graphic design arts skills you have obtained through the learning process.

Mention which design or graphics programs you’re familiar with as well as how long you’ve been using those programs.  This gives clients an idea of how much you know about design and whether or not your skills will match their needs.

What the Client Wants

Some clients might want a veteran designer who has been around a while and are willing to pay more for such.  Others might want to save money by giving a newcomer a chance.  This really depends on the client.

Display Your Work

Build an online web design portfolio on your website using links to example sites (if you’ve created any yet).  If you designed your own website, you can mention this in your portfolio.

You can also design sample templates and use a screen capture program to create on-screen images of your work.   Be sure to use the “thumbnail” technique with these images, making a smaller image to enlarge with one click of the mouse.  This is a nifty trick that may impress your potential buyers.

Designing at No Charge

Some newbies to the design field offer a complimentary online web design services to friends or associates (who own businesses) so they can build a set of examples.  No one has to know you didn’t charge for the work, but having these references will help you build trust until you get paying clients.  You can also create  graphics/logos in the same way if you plan to offer these website services.

Avoid Complex Presentations

If you design your portfolio using Flash or other presentational formats, be sure to build an HTML version as well.  The reason?  Some of your potential clients will be newcomers to the Internet and might not understand how to “download the latest Flash player” and so on.

These need to have an HTML option available so they can view your online web design portfolio the traditional way.  Flash presentations look great, but only if the user can actually view them.  Keep in mind that most business owners looking to hire a web designer are probably not “web savvy” yet.

As Always – Keep It Simple!

Starting your online web design service doesn’t have to be complicated.  Once you begin building a design portfolio, you’ll likely discover that you have much more to offer clients than ever imagined! So, get your training, get your portfolio together, and start your designing business! Want to Learn More? Go Here to get even more website designing information for beginners.
