Many beginners take for granted ways to advertise and promote their online businesses after they build a website so here are some tips of the trade and ideas to let you know that putting pages on the Internet is just the starting point. What you do after that might spell the difference between success and failure.

Never do this

It’s an unwritten rule that, when you build a website from scratch or with a wysiwyg software system, you automatically acquire certain rights.

For example, you have the right to plaster the URL address of the website on your SUV or motor home if you like and hope the person behind sees it and visits the website you’ve just built.

You also have the right to post pictures of your family, pets and the last vacation you took. This is your right and you can exercise it at free will.

The right to be successful online

Another right that you have towards your website is to make your website successful. You may not have thought of it as a right, but once you build a website, you have control as a webmaster and in fact an obligation to make it successful and profitable.

A lot has been said about creating successful websites. However, little has been written, in comparison, to what to avoid that would ruin a website and the reputation of its owner.

1. Clutter It Not!

One thing to avoid once you build a website is cluttering it. What is your first impression when you walk into a room with clutter?

That is exactly how your visitors will feel once they enter your online “room’. What is worse, imagine they are looking for something on your website. Avoid lots of pictures and banners and pop-up screens. If you are creating a MySpace page, well that is all fine and good, but with a professional business website, you cannot afford to distract your visitors.

2. Build a Website and Never Go Back to It

Most people have a website and if not, setting up one these days is as easy as ordering a pizza and having it delivered to your door. However, that is not the end of the story.

You cannot just set up a website and rest and expect that 6 months from now, it is still OK. You need to update your website regularly. In fact, search engines like Google want one of two things:

  • Unique Content
  • Fresh Content

They thrive on business or personal websites that are regularly updated with fresh news or articles and they will reward you for regularly updating your website by giving high page rankings.

Yes, that is right, high page rankings. Regularly updated sites tell visitors that you care about your website and they should too. Believe it or not, they will care if you care. And it doesn’t do any harm to get some good quality links back to your pages. The place I personally use for this is Blogging Underground. At the time of this writing my friend Mike has at least 200 monitored blogs you can post in to get updates indexed quickly plus he always gives some very nice bonuses and tutorials.

3. Don’t Pay Attention to Your Visitors

Another way to build a website and destroy it is to never respond to visitor comments and questions. Replying to emails and questions is considered courteous and businesslike.

If you do not reply, you do not come off that way and that is not good. Take time to go through all the user comments and questions and respond promptly.

Now you know how to build a website that won’t work. Reverse one, two, and three for a site that pulls in visitors and brings them back again. Soon you’ll be putting up new pages, tweaking your old site, inserting HTML image code for logos and all sorts of cool stuff! If the above points do not work for you, trust me, nothing will. Now, we’ve got work to do!
