A web text editor can provide
a quick and easy solution to editing your website's
HTML or XHTML code. You can open up any XHTML web
page and edit it with a text editor and then save
it as an .xhtml file.
This video about
website
designing offers tips
for choosing the right editor for your design
needs.
Video Guide for about HTML
Web Text Editors
1. Avoid Word
Processors
Never write an HTML or XHTML
web page in a word processor such as Microsoft Word
or similar programs. These will automatically
format the text and add additional coding that web
servers can't read. Your page might look fine in
the processor; however, trying to get it to look
right on the web can be a real hassle.
2. Dreamweaver, Front
Page, etc.
You can use programs such as
Dreamweaver and Front Page to edit raw page code,
but you should only buy these programs if you plan
to use all the other features while designing a
page. There's no need to pay money just to get the
web text editor!
3. Keep It
Simple
Notepad and similar programs
are great for editing code for HTML and XHTML web
pages. Why? These don't add additional codes to
your page so you can get the exact look and feel
you want for every project. They include very basic
features such as word wrap, but don't have all the
bells and whistles of complex designing software.
*Hint: You don't need
all those bells and whistles just to edit the raw
HTML or XHTML code!
Other program suggestions
include HTML-Kit and Eclipse, which both offer free
versions. If you opt for HTML-Kit's free version,
be mindful of the fact that it's mostly for
beginners, with updates being made to the paid
version for more current design techniques. Also,
HTML-Kit is only available for Windows systems.
Eclipse was developed for
Java developers originally, but has many plug-ins
for any type of computer language you need. With
both Eclipse and HTML-Kit web page editors, you can
customize your font as well as syntax highlighting
colors - great features for simple page
enhancements.
