Missing from the Typical Web Design Tutorial

novice when it comes to designing websites. So you

learn design skills, html

build a website for yourself or as a service to
others. After completing the tutorial, you find
yourself at a loss because you still have no idea
where to start when it comes to making design work

You either have to "naturally" find these skills

The word "perception" means
exercising the senses or mind to understand or

Unfortunately, design
tutorials teach how to add images, text, borders,
e-mails, etc. to a page, but they usually don't
teach you how to clearly get your message across.
To understand this fully, you might consider taking
an additional Web marketing tutorial and combine
design with your customer outreach.
2. Smart Use of
Graphics/Photos
Any tutorial can teach you
how to add graphics and photos to a web page. Some
courses might even mention where not to put the
graphics. But the truth is you'll need to be
creative as well as smart when it comes to image
placement. Find and read a few effective web
presentations.
Notice the placement of the
images and how they fit onto the page. Notice where
the reading areas begin and how the images are
placed to enhance the reading. Keep in mind that
images should complement the reading and make the
visitor want to read more-not distract them from
the copy.
3. How and When to Market
with a One-Page Web Layout
One-page web layouts can help
you promote certain types of small businesses, such
as those that don't need to display lots of
products or brick-and-mortar stores that wish to
create a simple online business card. An artist,
for instance, might create a one-page site and
provide links to various other sites that
display/sell his work, along with his contact
information. A writer might display her bio and
links to sample work. Same goes for anyone that
needs to keep their site very simplistic and to the
point.
4. Typography Skills
We're well beyond the "Dark
Ages" of the Internet, but typography still
continues to be a confusing issue among web
designers. Web
design courses will
often teach that you should never use more than one
or two fonts throughout your website.
They also warn against
not-so-common fonts, colors, etc. that might not
show well across the board on various users'
computers. But the trend is moving toward more
graphical sites, which means more flexibility with
typography. To expand your knowledge base about
this, check out a beginner's typography course (for
web designing). This can help you learn the right
and wrong way to use unusual fonts without hurting
your overall design.
5. Hand Art for the
Web
Some folks are naturally
artistic and can create amazing concepts on demand.
Others, however, need serious training in this area
of web design. Just studying website

doesn't mean you'll automatically become an artist.
Complete an art or graphic design class to take
your skills to the next level. Knowing both HTML
programming skills plus graphic art design will put
your designs over the top!
