10 How to Steps to
Successful Web Design Education
Ah... the intriguing thought
of learning
web design. How do
those programmers do what they do? Well it all
starts with proper web design education, from a
beginner's level and up. Most of us aren't born
knowing how to do computer programming or any type
of programming. Sure, there are geniuses in the
world, but if you're not one of them, it doesn't
mean you can't learn web design. So here are 10
steps to fruitful web design training.
1. Assess Your
Needs
Before taking a
beginner
web design course,
assess what you'll need to learn. Study the type of
programming languages available and which will suit
your needs. Will you design in PHP, CSS, plain
HTML, XHTML, or other methods? Find out as much as
you can about each type and the purposes / skill
set for each.
2. Start with the
Basics
Build your design skills
slowly, even if it means starting at the very
beginning. Most web design education classes offer
basics (such as HTML) and then move you to a higher
level of design gradually. Or, you can train from
multiple venues and build upon skills with each
course.
3. Career
Decisions
Why do you want/need to learn
web design? If you plan to design only for your own
company, then you can get by with the very basics
of design. But if you plan to design for others,
you'll need far reaching skills to meet the needs
of your clients. Decide how you will use your
newfound skills.
4. Leverage Your
Skills
Even if you plan to design
your own site (and not for others), you might
consider learning more than just the basics. This
gives you the ability to start a design business or
work as a programmer for another company should you
find yourself in need of a different career later
on.
5. Take Complementary
Courses
Web design education in and
of itself will not help you get clients or land a
dream job. Consider taking some marketing and
business courses either online or through your
local community college to complement your web
design degree. These can help you market yourself
as a knowledgeable designer, whether it be to new
clients on the web or to a Fortune 500 company in
your local area.
6. Experience a
Must
Even while still taking a web
design class, don't be afraid to offer free design
services to build experience. Your portfolio can be
filled with "free" clients, and no one ever has to
know they didn't pay you for your work. This can
help you build a paying clientele in a
hurry!
7. Network with Other
Students, Teachers and Others
Taking a web design class can
be beneficial because you'll get to meet other
students, teachers and possibly potential clients.
Network with those you know. Perhaps you can work
with several students to promote web design
services in your local area, and you can each share
the profits and work load.
8. Mentors in Web Design
Education
Learning web design has its
ups and downs. One of the "down sides" to learning
is being able to comprehend what's being taught.
While some functions are easy to understand, others
are not. It's wise to find a mentor, someone who
has been designing a while, to explain (one-on-one)
certain design techniques. This can save you much
time and eliminate confusion in a hurry!
9. Explore All Design
Options
If you're not definitely set
on learning a particular design or programming
method, then why not try all of them? It might cost
more for the extensive training, but you'll have
the upper hand in the job market for designers.
Being versatile in design ability enables you to
reach more clients or appeal to employers in a
greater capacity. You can charge more because
you're able to do more!
10. Be
Flexible
Web design education can give
you the necessary skills, but flexibility will help
you grow as a designer. Never stop learning design
techniques. Be willing to stay on top of the design
market and learn about new software programs, new
versions of HTML code, the latest browsers and
search engines, etc. Learning more about these
areas of website design will help you compete with
those avid marketers that always seem to know where
the Internet is headed before it gets
there!
Use these 10 steps to make
the most of your web design education. This can be
a very lucrative field for you if you stay on
course!
