With so many to choose from,
finding the right web
design class online
can be a challenge. Whether you're a complete
novice or just want to improve your skills, you
might be considering an online web course instead
of attending a local college or training class. And
if you're like most, you need a course that's
flexible for your schedule. Here are some ideas to
help you make the right selection.
Basics or
Advanced
Before starting your search,
decide if you need to learn
just the website design
basics or more
advanced web development procedures. Do you want to
focus on learning design or programming? There is a
difference between the two, although both often
bring about similar results.
Classes with a focus on
design often revolve around the "artsy" features of
a page, including layout, images, ad and link
placement, etc. Programming courses, however, focus
on writing HTML code and using it in various
programming languages to create certain functions
on a page.
Programming
Language
Another decision you'll need
to make is what type of programming language you
wish to learn. There are web design classes online
for every design language imaginable, from HTML 4
or 5 to Flash to PHP and CSS. You can also choose
from many software programs that will assist in the
design process to save time. These include
Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D Studio Max,
Fireworks, and many others.
Free or
Paid
Some sites offer free online
training and make money from affiliate sales income
and paid ads. These sources of training usually
offer a free e-book or will set up course lessons
online. Some free courses are great, but be sure
they teach proper design techniques and are not
outdated. Look up courses that offer a free glance
at the outline, with specifics about what's in the
course and which programs/language will be taught.
Paid courses might be your
best bet if you need to learn complicated
techniques. These are usually written in more
detail and are kept updated with the latest
programming methods. One of my favorites in
Shelley
Lowery's Webmastery Course
as it is very basic and easy to learn for
beginners.
College-Sponsored Web
Design Class Online
Consider taking a
college-sponsored online course if you need to earn
credits or a certificate for future job hunting.
Many colleges and universities offer online
versions of their courses to cater to working
students and parents. Offering online classes
enables the college to reach a broader audience
while catering to the needs of modern-day society.
Keep in mind that these are usually a lot more
expensive than privately-funded courses.
Final Tips for
Beginners
Whatever type of web
designing course you choose, be sure to read the
outline, find out the requirements (necessary
software, computer compatibility, lesson schedule,
etc.), and compare pricing. Also consider how well
you'll be able to transition to more advanced
levels with the knowledge you'll receive.
Will you be able to take
other similar courses using the same program or
language? Will you be able to offer web development
services to others for a fee after taking the
course? Think ahead to your future as a designer to
find the right web design class online for
you!
