Good
Web Page Design
How to Create
Good Web Pages
Building a website? No matter
if you are creating a new site or revamping an old
one, good web page design comes into play.
Your visitors will establish rapport (or not)
depending upon the look and feel of your website -
so do it right!
Good designing habits -
how do you compare?
There are several ways to
look at this her, with much has to do with your
type of business. For instance, let's say your
website gives banking or finance tips - the site
should have a corporate feel. If you sell artwork,
a dramatic, artistic look may be more appropriate.
Someone working in interior design would want their
site to say "home decor". A physical shop window is
a good analogy when deciding on the type of web
design for your site. Browsing should be a given
when people first come to your site - it's that
inviting.
In essence, this is what you
are shooting for. A good
web page design
has these features, and more. If you were visiting
a stock brokers place of business, you probably
wouldn't expect frilly curtains and window displays
of figurines, would you? But, this decorating style
would be expected from a gift or curio shop. The
main trait of the best website designs you'll see
online is that they are appropriate for the type of
business. That first impression is where you can
set expectations of the visitor - good or
bad.
Draw between the
lines
Even though you desire your
website to be unique and favorable, you still want
to conform to certain elements of composition to be
sure. If you try to be too different, this can be a
turnoff for your visitors.
Elements of
design
Web page layouts include
margins, either one or two which becomes your
navigation bar and a place for ads, etc.
Photographs or graphic images can be placed on the
top 1/4 of each page, also called "on top of the
fold". You could also use this space for PPC ads,
banners, etc. as this is the most viewed space on
the web page.
Research has shown that the
across the top banner ads tend to annoy visitors,
as they're too much in-your-face and lack subtlety.
Much like a huge 'SALE!' banner plastered across a
storefront window, this can invoke a What,
are they going out of business? response from
your visitors. A beautiful photo, along with your
company logo at the top left margin, is far more
engaging and appealing. Search boxes should be
where visitors expect them to be - the top right
margin, below your image, etc.
Making sure your web layout
and composition keeps within the parameters of
normal is another important signature of good
web
page design so don't
ignore this.
Flash design - yes or
no?
The use of Flash is still
controversial. While the web bots have learned how
to deal with Flash displays, there are still some
logistical challenges that may affect how often and
how well they crawl the site pages. Since the
majority of web searches still come from Google -
about three quarters, you'll need to check the
Google official site for new algorithms on making
those pages friendly to the search
engine.
Let your artistic side
emerge
Now that you have the
science, you'll also want to add a little art in
your designing method. In order for a web page
design to be appealing, it needs to be easy to
navigate and attractive - balance is the key. This
is why your visitors keep browsing your website,
instead of clicking away to another! Always
remember to think before you create. Have a
good plan of action and your web pages will delight
and entice your visitors to return. This is
what you want, isn't it?
